The EU directive 2010/32/EU framework agreement for the prevention of sharp injuries within hospitals, which was first published in May 2010, calls for increased operator safety when handling blood collection devices – including arterial blood gas syringes, and must be implemented by May 11 2013.
To ensure compliance:
- All blood gas syringes must incorporate safety-engineered protection mechanisms
- Safe procedures for using and disposing of medical sharps must be implemented
- Recapping of blood gas syringe needles will be banned

A range of proven, safe and easy to use syringes to meet your specific requirements
Radiometer's safePICO and safePICO70 arterial blood gas syringes offer a proven, safe and easy way of meeting the specific requirements of the directive, helping to eliminate needlestick injuries and protect staff from exposure to patient blood.
The built-in safety device can be operated single-handedly, and allows for simple and safe removal of needles. Once a blood sample has been collected from the patient, the operator just slides the needle shield over the needle and locks it safely into place. An audible “click” signals that the safety device has been activated correctly.
The needle, now safely contained within the shield, can then be detached and disposed of safely. Radiometer’s safety mechanism has been constructed for robustness and is irreversible once it has been activated.
